Warranties are typically full of fine print and legal jargon that usually doesn’t make much sense to most homeowners. Does anyone read warranties? Probably not until you’re scrambling to file a claim but by then, you might find out you do not have the coverage you thought you had. Scary, right? Having a basic understanding ahead of needing to file a claim provides peace of mind. Owens Corning provides three warranty options depending on the coverage you’re looking for. Let’s get into it!
Owens Corning Warranty Terms to Know:
Overall Warranty Length: As a single-family homeowner, lifetime coverage means that your warranty is in effect as long as you own your home.
TRU PROtection® Period: Each warranty starts with a TRU PROtection® Period during the initial years where coverage includes labor cost to repair/replace defective materials.
Materials Only Coverage: After the TRU PROtection® Period is over, warranty compensation is for materials only. The compensation is reduced based on the number of years you’ve enjoyed your roof from the installation date through the date of your claim.
Blow Off Coverage: After your shingles have achieved thermal sealing they will be covered if they experience blow-offs or wind damage in winds (including gusts) for the wind speed listed for the period from the original installation date.
StreakGuard™ Algae Resistance: Warranty length following the date of installation against brown-black staining caused by the growth of cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa magma algae.
Workmanship Coverage Period: Contractor workmanship coverage includes any defective installation of the Owens Corning® Roofing System. Contractor workmanship is available only through certified Owens Corning Roofing Platinum or Preferred Contractors.
Owens Corning Component Products: The minimum number of Owens Corning® component product categories that must be installed to qualify for warranty coverage. The categories of component products include underlayments, intake and exhaust ventilation, hip & ridge shingles, ice & water barriers, and starter shingles.
Contractor Certification Required: Your Owens Corning® Roofing System must be installed by a certified Owens Corning Roofing Platinum or Preferred Contractor and your contractor must register the warranty within 60 days of the installation. Seaberg Construction is a Preferred Contractor.
GOOD: Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Warranty
The Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Warranty is the standard coverage included by the manufacturer just for using their products at no additional cost to you. This coverage protects against manufacturing defects. Each Owens Corning warranty starts with a TRU PROtection® Period during the initial years where coverage includes labor costs to repair and replace defective materials. After the TRU PROtection® Period is over, the coverage is for materials only and adjusted based on the age of your roof. This period varies based on the type of home you have, i.e., a one-family home versus a two-family home.
BETTER: Owens Corning System Protection Limited Warranty
The Owens Corning System Protection Limited Warranty includes everything in the Standard Product Limited Warranty but increases your TRU PROtection® Period from the first ten years to the first 50 years. Remember, the TRU PROtection® coverage includes labor costs to repair and replace defective materials. After the TRU PROtection® Period is over, warranty compensation is for materials only. The compensation is reduced based on the number of years you’ve enjoyed your roof from the installation date through the date of your claim. With the Owens Corning System Protection Limited Warranty, you have an increase in material coverage from 15 years to 50 years. This doesn’t come without a price though. Owens Corning does charge a per square price for the added value.
BEST: Owens Corning Preferred Protection Limited Warranty
The Owens Corning Preferred Protection Limited Warranty includes everything in the System Protected Limited Warranty but includes contractor workmanship coverage. This includes any defective installation of the Owens Corning® Roofing System. Contractor workmanship is available only through certified Owens Corning Roofing Platinum or Preferred Contractors. Seaberg Construction is a Preferred Owens Corning Contractor. Owens Corning does charge a per square price for the added value. For homeowners who work with Seaberg Construction, this option may not be worth the additional money because we have already back our workmanship for 10 years. If you are looking for bulletproof coverage with extra peace of mind, it’s still an option for you.
Seaberg Construction 10-Year Workmanship Warranty
Just for hiring us to replace your roof, we include a 10-year workmanship warranty at no additional charge to you. We’ll stand behind our crew’s workmanship and fix any mistakes that may happen. It’s an extremely rare occurrence that something goes wrong with the installation process but knowing it’s there just in case will help you sleep at night.
In the table below you’ll find an easy way to compare each warranty to determine which coverage is right for you and your home.
